Business Tutorial

Find Books and Media in WorldCat

  • Search WorldCat for books owned by Averett and other libraries.
  • Read eBooks online.
  • Borrow print books or ask the library to ship them to you.
  • Request books owned by other libraries on interlibrary loan (ILL).

Search WorldCat for the most important keywords in your topic statement, or for an author (au:), subject (su:) or title (ti:). Enter a string of words from the title or topic in quotation marks. For example:

shakespeare hamlet  [everything!]

au:shakespeare ti:hamlet  [editions]

su:shakespeare hamlet  [criticism]

sports nutrition

su:athletes nutrition

"social inequality" "united states"

"food deserts"

su:developmental biology

su:Bees

"evolutionary developmental biology"

Print books at Blount Library display with status, location, and call number on the results screen:

Books "Available" in the "Main Books Stacks" are shelved on the upper or lower floors of Blount Library by Library of Congress Classification. "Juvenile" books are in the Children's Literature Collection on the upper floor. "Reference" books are on the main floor. Ask at the Information Desk for titles in the "Media Collection." Ask the Reference Librarian for access to Archives and Manuscripts. (You may need to make an appointment with the Archivist.)

Library of Congress Call numbers are alphanumeric. The letters file alphabetically, with A-HJ on the upper level, and HM-Z on the lower level of the library. The first letters and numbers denote a specific subject, as you can see from browsing the Library of Congress Classification Outline.

PN171 (Language and Literature / Authorship)
.F56  (Decimal number: F 0.56)
L56   (This is also a decimal number.)
2004

The first number (171 in this example) is a whole number paired with letters to denote a major subject. The second and third lines have decimal numbers. This will start to make sense if you get to the library stacks, where the books are shelved alphanumerically by subject and the decimal numbers are interfiled:

.F525
.F56
.F562
.F58
.G225
.G3

Unless you want a job at the library, we will not test you on this skill! If you can't locate a book just ask at the Information Desk. We will help you find it. If you are not in Danville, we will find it and ship it to you!

When you find e-books listed in WorldCat, click "Access online" to read them. A print copy of the book in the example below is on Course Reserves. You can request it at the Blount Library Information Desk.

The WorldCat database indexes millions of library books, recordings, scores, maps, web sites and media titles. Resources at Averett will sort at the top of your WorldCat search results. To find a book whether or not Averett has it, change "Results sorted by" from "Library and Relevance" to "Relevance Only."

Borrow Print Books and Media

Borrow Books

When you find a book that you want to check out, bring it to the Information Desk with your student ID card. Staff will swipe your card and the book, and provide a due date slip, usually for three weeks from the checkout date. Graduate students and staff may borrow books for eight weeks, full-time faculty for one semester.

Videos and DVD's circulate for three days. Periodicals and Reference books do not circulate. They are for use in the library building.

Due dates vary for books borrowed through Interlibrary Loan. To preserve Averett's good reputation and interlibrary borrowing privileges, please return interlibrary loan items by their due dates.

If your classes meet outside of Danville, contact aclib@averett.edu to request shipment of books and media to your home or office.

Renew Books

To renew your library books for an additional three (or eight) weeks, simply phone the library (791-5690; 800-543-9440) or write to circdesk@averett.edu.

Avoid Fees!

You are personally responsible for the care and safe return of library materials borrowed on your Averett ID card.

Some items in Blount library were printed in the 19th Century. Please preserve collections for future generations of students by protecting borrowed items from excessive heat, moisture, food particles, and abuse.

Late fees for most circulating items are 25 cents per item per day, with a brief grace period and a cap on the maximum fine. For Course Reserves, Interlibrary Loan, and Media, late fees are $1.00 per day, with no grace period.

We know that college is expensive! To avoid late fees, renew or return borrowed items before they become overdue. The library will send a courtesy notice to your Averett email account 2-3 days prior to each due date.

Interlibrary Loan Through Worldcat

To borrow a WorldCat book not held at Averett, select the full record and click "Request Interlibrary Loan." Note: You must be logged in to the Averett Library to see this button. (Use your AU web services login, as for subscription databases.)

Interlibrary loan (ILL) staff will identify a lending library and contact you when a book is ready for pick up at the Circulation Desk. If you attend classes outside of Danville, Averett will ship books to your home or office.

If the interlibrary loan can be shared electronically, ILL staff will send you a link in email.
